THE “MERCAT DEL RAM” .- A VERITABLE FAIR TO VIC, WITH THE PRESENCE OF MANY SECTORS.

The “Mercat del Ram” in Vic is a true celebration for the community and a key meeting point for the agricultural sector.
Historical records indicate that this festival was mentioned in one of King Odo’s decrees written in the year 888. However, it wasn’t until 1930 that efforts were made to modernize the fair. This transformation introduced highly curated exhibitions of animals, artisanal products, agricultural machinery, and trade displays. Over the years, other elements were added, encompassing economic, popular, cultural, folkloric, and creative activities, such as the rapid painting contest, sports competitions, culinary showcases, and equestrian displays.
Traditional activities held alongside the event include the blessing of palm branches at various places of worship, the “Procession of Silence,” and the “Friday of Sorrows” concert.
Originally established around the traditional “Mercat del Ram” to promote the purchase of palm and laurel branches for Palm Sunday, this event has evolved into one of the most significant and prominent fairs in Catalonia. It has grown into a true multisectoral fair. Although it was initially celebrated between Palm Saturday and Easter Sunday, since 1976, it has been concentrated into the three days of Palm Weekend, with the opening on Friday afternoon and the closing on Sunday evening of the same weekend.
Among the most attended activities during these intense days are the Catalan Frisian Cow Contest, the Swine Carcass Contest, and the Technical Livestock Conferences.
Additionally, the “Window Dressing Contest” and the International Hot Air Balloon Trophy are not to be missed.
